Choke Tube Identification

How to identify the correct choke for your Beretta shotgun?
In our guide, we present some methods to identify the choke family and recognize the correct one for purchase.

Choosing the right choke is extremely important to achieve the best performance and to adapt it to your shooting needs, whether in hunting or in sport shooting. The correct selection helps improve accuracy, patterning, and the versatility of your firearm.

To make this choice consciously, it is important to correctly identify the choke mounted on the barrel by using different recognition methods. Below, we explain how to find the most suitable choke for your Beretta shotgun through simple and safe methods: it is crucial to remember that mounting and firing with an incompatible choke can damage the shotgun and seriously injure the shooter!

Choke Tube Identification Methods

There are several chokes available for Beretta shotguns, how can you identify the right one for you? It’s not as difficult as it may seem, since each shotgun accepts only one “Family” of chokes and of a single gauge, within which you can choose the model you prefer (examples of models: flush, extended, ported, black edition, etc.).

To better understand what has been outlined, below you will find the main variants of family and gauge — the information you need:

  • “Family”: Mobile-Choke, Optima-Choke, Optima-Choke Plus, Optima-Choke HP (latest model developed)
  • Gauge: 12, 20, 28, .410

In the following paragraphs, you will discover the best methods to identify the “Family” of chokes compatible with your shotgun (gauge is considered known by the owner). Those apply independently if they are Over & Under, Semiauto or Side By Side.

1. Visual Method

The fastest way to identify the “Family” is to take down one choke you are currently using on your shotgun, clean it and check the markings on the side of the choke. Here's an example:

Note: Mobile-Choke “Family” could also be marked as “PB” or “ST”.

2. Choke Measurement Method

For this method, you only need to measure the choke you are currently using, from the end of the thread to the end of the choke (for extended chokes, measure from the end of the thread to the end of the part inside the barrel):
